USA Travels 2010 - Wyoming 6

The gun culture is the norm in Wyoming....

More than 60 complete and partial Allosaurus skeletons have been recovered from the Morrison Formation between Wyoming and New Mexico. It is the largest and most common carnivore found in these widespread deposits. At the Cleveland Lloyd Quarry in Utah Allosaurus is by far the most numerous fossil type and is represented by at least 44 individuals. These ranged in size from adults to juveniles. The genus Allosaurus is based on the virtually complete skeleton discovered by M. P. Felch in 1883. Allosaurus was a carnivorous "lizard-hipped" dinosaur or theropod with a bony red crest above each eye. It had a strong s-shaped neck, two sturdy legs and a powerful tail. Its teeth were 5-10 cm long and curved backward with serrated front and back edges. Allosaurus' strong back and neck aided its jaws in tearing off chunks of flesh Allosaurus fed on sauropods and other large game but it was not built for speed. It had quite short arms compared to its legs but they were powerful for a carnivore. They ended in three long, hook-like claws that were important for attacking and holding on to prey. Its feet were much larger and one of its four toes pointed towards its tail giving it better stability.

So windy here - 50-60 mph winds at the top of the dam  - visitor centre in the background.....

Our campsite for the night next to the reservoir - slight sulphurous smell coming off the water as described in the visitors centre

The creek that feeds the reservoir used to be called Smelly Creek! We now know why....
