Bar and Bass Harbour - Maine - Page 1

The Acadia area of Maine is very popular and the second most visited National Park in the USA.

Places like Bar Harbour even have cruise ships stopping in during the summer months!

The place is mainly a shopping area for tourists but it is easy to get off the beaten track

Bass harbour on the other hand is a very pleasant area.....

One unique feature of Acadia National Park is the "Carriage" road system which inlcudes

45 miles of rustic (motor vehicle free) carriage roads weave around the park.

These were established by John Rockefeller Jr. in 1913 - 1940 so he could ride his horses in the heart of the Mount Desert Island area.

All a bit odd given his Dad (John Rockefeller Sn.) was the founder of Standard Oil!

Today we can enjoy riding our bike around these beautiful carriage ways.

It poured with rain on the day we were going to ride so we walked part way around Eagle Lake.  No photos unfortuntately.
