Ronning Garden

The Bernt Ronning

Bernt (originally from Denmark) established his homestead in 1910 near the western terminus of the old San Josef Wagon Road.  He lived in the area until 1960 working as a trapper, fisherman and camp cook.  He cleared 5 acres of the rainforest and ordered seeds and cuttings of trees and plants from around the world.  After his death in the 1960's, the garden nearly disappeared with competition from rainforest plants.  The garden is open to the public and there was no evidence of anyone else there when we visited.

Said to be one of the oldest monkey puzzle trees in BC.

There were two but a stump on the left, shows where the twin tree once stood.

Monkey puzzle - From Chile.....

Bernt apparently successfully bred a number of these and exported them around the world.

Nobody home - garden with rhubarb and kale.....

Interesting machinery left of rot......

Old stuff from the past.....
