India Trip - 2016 - Kolkata - Page 1

Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. Located on the east bank of the Hooghly river, it is the principal commercial, cultural, and educational centre of East India, while the Port of Kolkata is India's oldest operating port and its sole major riverine port. As of 2011, the city had 4.5 million residents; the urban agglomeration, which comprises the city and its suburbs, was home to approximately 14.1 million, making it the third-most populous metropolitan area in India.

It was the world's longest-serving democratically elected communist government

It has an amazing array of building architecture (mostly run down like Cuba....) from when it was the capitol of India

Plus things like these vintage "Rickshaws" are still in use

But the government is in the process of removing them.....

It has the Howarah Bridge (also known as the Rabindra Setu)

This bridge is a similar size to the Sydney Harbour Bridge

But is the busiest bridge in the world!

Life on the street features big in Kolkata

But the kids seem happy.....
